Common Sense Economics Inc. ("we", "us", or the "Provider") respects your privacy and is committed to protecting your personal information. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use The Canadian Housing Atlas ("Atlas"). This policy is designed to comply with Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and British Columbia's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA).

2. Information We Collect

We collect the following categories of personal information:

  • Account Information: Name, email address, and organization name provided during registration.
  • Billing Information: Payment card details are collected and processed securely by Stripe, our payment processor. We do not store your full card number on our servers.
  • Usage Data: Information about how you interact with the Software, including pages visited and features used, collected for service improvement purposes.
  • Technical Data: Browser type, device information, and IP address collected automatically when you access the Software.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use your personal information for the following purposes:

  • To provide and maintain your access to the Software
  • To process subscription payments and manage your billing
  • To communicate with you about your account, including service updates and support
  • To enforce our Terms of Service and protect against unauthorized access
  • To improve the Software and develop new features

4. Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services that process your data:

  • Clerk — Authentication and user management. Clerk processes your name, email, and session data. See Clerk's Privacy Policy.
  • Stripe — Payment processing. Stripe processes your payment card details and billing address. See Stripe's Privacy Policy.
  • PostHog — Product analytics. PostHog processes usage events (pages visited, features used) and technical data (browser type, approximate location derived from IP address). We use a first-party analytics cookie set on commonsenseeconomics.ca and shared across its subdomains (including Atlas), so we can understand how visitors move between our main site and Atlas. This identifier is used only for our own analytics: it is not used for advertising, and it is not shared with third parties for their own purposes. See PostHog's Privacy Policy.

5. Data Retention

We retain your personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide you with the Software. Upon account closure or cancellation:

  • Account data: Retained for 90 days following closure to facilitate potential reactivation, then deleted.
  • Billing records: Retained for up to 7 years as required for tax and financial compliance.
  • Usage analytics: Retained in anonymized form for up to 24 months for service improvement.

You may request deletion of your account and associated data at any time by contacting us. We will respond to deletion requests within 30 days.

6. Data Security

We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your personal information against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. All data is transmitted using TLS encryption. However, no method of transmission over the Internet is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

7. Your Rights

Under Canadian privacy law, you have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you
  • Request correction of inaccurate personal information
  • Request deletion of your personal information
  • Request portability of your personal information in a commonly used format
  • Withdraw consent for processing where consent is the legal basis

8. Aggregated & Anonymized Data

We may create aggregated and anonymized datasets derived from usage patterns and platform activity. Such data does not identify any individual user and is not considered personal information. We reserve the right to use and disclose aggregated, anonymized data for any lawful purpose, including service improvement, research, and industry benchmarking.

9. Quebec Residents

If you are a resident of Quebec, you may have additional rights under Quebec's Act Respecting the Protection of Personal Information in the Private Sector (Law 25). These include the right to data portability and the right to be informed of automated decision-making. Where this Privacy Policy conflicts with mandatory provisions of Quebec privacy law, the applicable Quebec statutory provisions shall prevail.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any material changes by posting the new policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date. Your continued use of the Software after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
